Renaissance Faire

We went to the Des Moines Renaissance Faire on Saturday. It was kind of fun, but definitely not worth the price of admission.

We had fun trying on hats, but the food was pretty yucky and everything was overpriced.

Maybe we're all just too old and jaded.

Be sure to drop by the DM Faire website and fill out the comments -- they go through all the feedback to tweak the event from year to year.

A food discovery I made this year was the pitas - as good as at a coffee shop or bistro in town:

Also tried the crepe meat sandwiches for the first time. I'm not sure I'm a crepe fan (pancake with meat?) but it's certainly fancier than, say, a corn dog or burger:

After three years, I'm still working my way through the menus. I also recommend the Scotch Eggs -- I think they are better in DM than the ones I bought at Minnesota Ren Fest.

They are $4 at DM, and $4.50 In MNRF, so I think DM's food prices aren't that far off (mostly a bit cheaper than at the other perm events in our area).

(And, well, after the prices at the Iowa State Faire, the beers and pretty much ANY FOOD at the renfest seemed downright cheap ;-)

We did enjoy the kettle fries and I had my first smoked turkey leg - now that was good!
I would agree the food prices certainly aren't worse than the Iowa State Fair, but I think the admission price is awfully steep.

Karen~ The Fair broke us, as usual. Maybe some people prefer the Ren Faire? I'd love to check it out sometime but the entrance fees scare me. I'm glad you had fun. ;)

Glad to hear about the cost. I can feel better about not ever having made it. Food prices always kill me too at these types of events, so I usually don't buy anything unless I think it is very unique...very good...and something I couldn't get else where.
Hat sharing always makes me worry of lice:0
